Discussions on dog health for dummies
My dog's health
My family has had a dog for about ten years now. She has a hairless spot on one of her elbows. Is this harmful? It hasn't spread since she got it.
I didn't take care of my dog's health properly so he died ...
... and without me on his side. I've been carrying these sadness for over a year now. I was far away when my dog died and my mom informed me about his death after 2 weeks he died when i went home. I keep blaming myself for what happened to my baby dog. If only his mommy was around that time, this wouldn't happen. It makes me so sad to see pictures and images of dogs here in the internet. I know i can't avoid these but haaaahhhh, i miss my dog. (sigh):(
Is it necessary to make unkind assumptions in comments?
I just read a comment that made the poster really upset, the comment went if the poster could not afford a vet bill he'should not have a dog. Now on the face of it that might make sense, but the poster was trying to explain when he got the dog he was not in any financial trouble, now he was as he has had the dog for quite some time. Was it necessary for the commenter to make this snippy comment? It had nothing to do with answering the discussion really only that the poster had worries about his elderly dog's health and was leery of b eing able to pay a vet. Why do we have to judge each other here on mylot? I mean in a discussion about a dogs health is no place for a lecture on how to live surely. If nothing else the commenter could have been kinder. In todays economy a lot of middle class people are among the jobless.
Where Do we Get our Ideas...?
Ideas Are Free...And Easy The real answer to the question is almost as flippant. The truth is, ideas are free. We grow them naturally. Just about anything we see, hear, read, or experience can spark an idea. No, getting ideas isn't difficult. You are sitting on a bunch of 'em right now. Okay, then: where are the ideas? Just about anything but trying to think of ideas is a source of ideas. Here are just a few: * Newspaper and magazine articles * Short stores and novels * Television programs or movies * A painting * Conversation * Memories * An interesting experience * A fascinating person * A lecture or class * The death of a friend * Holidays * A great meal (or a terrible meal) * A beautiful landscape * An ugly building Some of the sources, such as a fascinating person or an interesting experience, are themselves subjects. Others are the sorts of things that start your mind working, get your thoughts moving in general or specific directions. Note that suggestions like stories and books, or TV programs and films are not meant to encourage you to try to duplicate or be derivative. And it definitely doesn't mean to copy what you see....
Here's an easy, time saving tip to help you post more on MyLot.
Here's a trick that I use to tag my discussions. Next time you hit the "tag" page on a MyLot discussion, look just above the little tag box. There will be a bit of text from the original post. Find a word or set of words that describes the post, within that text and copy/paste it into the tag box. Most times, the person posting the discussion will include related keywords in their discussion and you can simply copy/paste those into the tag box, after you finish responding. Be sure to seperate each tag with a comma. These words are going to be more directly related to the discussion, than something you could make up. And, it saves hours on typing. For instance, a discussion about dogs, might have words like: dog, dog care, dog health, etc. You can simply copy/paste all or any of these words as tags. This is one of the easiest and best ways that I've found to tag discussions without typing. Some people will argue with me, that maybe it's better to type out your own tags. Everyone's got their own technique. And, this one works for me. If you're interested in saving a bit of time, while posting, please give it a try and let me know how...
The best dog food...
Everyone would like to feed their dog the best dog food. With so many dog food products on the market and conflicting information on diet, nutrition, and dog health it is easy to get overwhelmed and confused the best thing for people dogs, cats and all other animals to eat is real food. Many people are under the assumption that dogs are supposed to eat dog food meaning kibble or canned food but dog food is an invention of man created for convenience. Real food can consist of a cooked or raw diet, and experts disagree on which is truly healthiest. In reality most people lack the time, knowledge or the confidence to prepare meals for their dogs but still want to give their dogs the best possible food.
Do you feed raw to your dog?
I read an article about raw feeding from Jane Anderson's raw learning site, saying that raw feeding is very good for your dog's health. She says that it's a natural diet and can keep your dog from various allergy problems and the benefits include no doggy odour, natural clean teeth, better weight control, etc. Does anyone here have the experience of feeding raw to your dog? Is it really good and effective as they say? Aren't chicken bones dangerous? Can commercial dog food really cause series of disease when your dog gets old? I just wanna know how many people out there are feeding a raw diet to their dogs and how their dogs are doing with the diet.
Have you heard of storm capes for dogs?
I was just watching a local news program and they mentioned that there is a company that makes storm capes for dogs. Supposedly the capes help alleviate static electricity discomfort that dogs get during storms. Not sure where you can buy them. But, I think the company has an online website. Just wanted to pass this information along, just in case you are concerned with you dog's health during storms.
Why 'hybrid vigour' in dogs is a joke
Any litter of dogs, whether they be purebred or mutt is just a roll of the dice. Responsible breeders take the time to compare the pros and cons of the sire and dam to try to ensure that the puppies will be as close to the standard for that breed and as healthy as they possibly can be. They also do a plethora of health testing, from x-raying hips and elbows to rule out dysplasia, having their dog's eyes cleared to rule out progressive retinal atrophy and other eye defects, blood tests for Von Willebrands and ultrasounds for heart defects.Mrs. Smith, with Fifi, the malti-poo down the street that got bred by Rex, the terrier cross next door, probably didn't even deworm the puppies before they went to their new homes. Because neither the sire nor dam has ever been checked or cleared for any of the above diseases, their chance of producing affected offspring is much greater than any other mating that has been checked.Because most pet owners don't check their young adult mutts for these diseases, again, we have a series of puzzled pet owners wondering why their beloved dog passed away at 6 while catching a frisbee (heart defect), or why their 8 year old dog has suddenly...
